Fall 2024
Nursery
Co-op Class Options

Nursery - 1st Period

Ages 1 and under need to have a parent stay with them (whether that’s in the nursery, or if you choose to take the child around with you).  For ages 2 and under, we will have nursery volunteers to watch your kids.  We have background checks on all adults attending MBCA.  We have two wonderful spaces for babies and toddlers, with baby beds, changing tables, toys, etc.

Co-op Class Options

Sensory Stations (K3-K5)- 1st Period

In this class, kids will learn, explore, and play through themed sensory bins, sensory crafts, and more!

Play Through the Bible (K3-K5) - 1st Period

This class is designed to help your child learn and experience God’s Word in a way that is fun and meaningful.  We will be going through a Bible story each week from the Old Testament starting with Creation and ending with Esther.  This class will include a combination of dye-free themed snacks, a sensory station, songs, activities, and crafts that go along with the Bible story.

 

Fee: $10

Hands On Learning (K3-K5)- 2nd Period

This class will be an exciting and creative experience.  We’ll explore a variety of subjects in engaging and interactive ways.  Be prepared to get a little messy and have lots of fun!

Ballet (K3-2nd) - 2nd Period

We’ll combine interactive dance lessons with music and fun activities to help encourage your child to use their imagination to inspire their next dance move.

School Yard Games (K3-K5)- 3rd Period

This outside class period will give little ones a chance to get their wiggles out and learn some classic games like red rover, tag, wall ball, and more!

Craft Time ABC (K3-K5) - 3rd Period

Each week, we will focus on a letter of the alphabet.  We will read books and do crafts to teach the letter.

Animal Facts & Crafts (K3-2nd)- 4th Period

In this class, each week the kids will learn about a different animal, and we’ll talk about the animal’s life, abilities, discover interesting facts, and do a simple craft that correlates to that animal.

Kinder Phonics (K3-K5) - 4th Period

Students will watch “Leap Frog Letter Factory”, participate in craft activities, and develop phonics skills in order to begin reading.  We will work on vowel and consonant sounds and focus on a new letter each week in conjunction with a craft.

Lower Elementary (1st-3rd Grades)
Co-op Class Options

1st Period

TinkerLab is an open-ended invitation to tinker and create.  Each week, students will have access to various materials to explore and create a project with.  Projects may be individual, collaborative, prompted, or inspired by one’s own imagination.

Exploring Our Surroundings
(1st-3rd) -
1st Period

We will learn about a variety of subjects that we encounter in our surroundings:  holidays, animals, people, and more!

Fruits of the Spirit Bible Class (1st-6th) - 1st Period

In this class, we will strive to deepen our understanding of the nine character traits listed in Galatians 5:22-23 as the “Fruit of the Holy Spirit” (love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control), and explore how to actively cultivate these qualities in our daily lives to become more Christ-like. A different craft and fruit/snack will be provided each week.

Lyrical Ballet Dance
(3rd-6th) -
1st Period

Students will work on flexibility, rhythm, showmanship, and dance technique (turns, foot placement, leaps).  Girls pink ballet shoes are required (preferably split sole). They will also need to wear leggings, bike shorts, or leotards with tights.  They will also need to wear a short-sleeved t-shirt or tank top.   Boys can wear black ballet shoes.  

 

Music used in class will be hymns, instrumental music, or contemporary Christian.  Fee: $0

Conversational Spanish (3rd-5th) - 1st Period

This will be conversational Spanish for beginners (introuduction, greetings)

Paper Bag Engineering
(1st-3rd) -
2nd Period

This will be a class for stem-based building using prompts and “mystery” materials.

In this class, we will hone our scissor skills, while creating beautiful cards to send to loved ones and to organizations of our choosing.  We will explore different techniques like paper making, printing, and other methods.

Kickball/ Wiffle Ball
(2nd-4th) - 2nd Period

Calling all future kickball and wiffle ball champions!  Join our class where we’ll learn the secrets of the game while having a blast!  Never played before?  No worries — we’ll teach you!  Just bring your energy and a big smile!  Get ready for some epic fun and a few giggles along the way.  Let’s play ball!

We will focus on building and creativity within the parameters of the Minecraft word.  This seamster, we will spend time learning the mechanics of redstone and how to build the working circuits that create moving parts, such as automatic farms, hidden doors, and more!

Cooking class will be structured a little differently this semester to help it go a little smoother for everyone!  Reducing the class size will allow us to make more variety of foods and we will divide into groups for different tasks each week.  We’re opening the class to a larger age group to hopefully integrate some peer modeling/peer-to-peer assistance.  This is a list of the foods we will make this semester, in no particular order:

Each week, we will read a book and have a related activity.  Some weeks may include a snack, so please be sure to let me know about any allergies.

This class will be a laid-back time to sip hot tea and enjoy a cookie while we read poetry and enjoy one another’s company.

In this class, we will use a variety of mediums and materials, such as clay, paper, yarn, and watercolor to create different crafts and art that students will take home.  This will be a fun class for all skill levels.  All students will be encouraged to take their time when creating projects.

Flag Football
(3rd-6th) -
4th Period

In flag football, we will be learning the basics of flag football.  We will run drills and learn how to play the game.  This year, we will also be playing competitive games against the Navigators Homeschool Co-op (based in Spanish Fort).  Once a month, we will meet in either Spanish Fort, Fairhope, or Saraland to compete against the Navigators (around 4 games per semester).  Sometimes the games will be on our campus; sometimes it will be on theirs.  Students will need a mouth guard and a water bottle.  The fee will go to buying equipment and possibly jerseys.

Upper Elementary (4th-6th Grades)

Art Appreciation (4th-12th) -
1st Period

Each week, we will study different artists and do an art project inspired by each artist.

Story of the World
(4th-6th) -
1st Period

We will explore the ancient world from the pyramids of Egypt to the Hanging Gardens of Babylon, and from the Spartans to Attila the Hun.  Each week, we will bring ancient history to life!

You will need “The Story of the World, Vol. 1” book, so you can read and be ready to discuss in class each week.  We will do activities to bring the stories to life.  Students can earn tickets for class participation and homework completed.  At the end of the semester, there’ll be a store where students can spend their tickets.

2nd Period

 Get ready to go on an adventure through the United States of America!!  We will journey through the states and learn all about their capitals, flowers, birds, and other interesting facts that each state uniquely has!

 

There will be opportunities to earn tickets each week through work in the class and at home (optional).  The kids will save up the tickets for the end of the semester to exchange them for goodies at the “store” for all of their hard work!

In this class, we will learn a variety of classic card games, such as solitaire, speed, and spoons.  We will also be learning Texas Hold ‘Em and Blackjack, but we will be playing with chips only-just for fun.  NO REAL BETTING!  The kids will also learn to shuffle a deck of cards if they don’t already know how, and will get to take a deck home at the end of the semester.

Conversational Spanish

This is a more intermediate conversational Spanish class.  This class is for students who already took the Beginner class and are returning for the intermediate.

In this class, students can test their R/C car driving skills against other students while exploring science, math, and physics in a fun way.  We will be building ramps, measuring speed, distance, time, and much more.  Students will also be learning mechanics as the r/c cars have many of the same components or larger vehicles–just scaled down.  Students are required to bring their own car with a charged battery.  This class will be at the baseball field.  If you don’t feel comfortable with your child walking through the parking lot unattended, please do not put them in this class.

Debate (6th-12th) -
4th Period

For this class, we will focus on the basics of communication, public speaking, and structuring an argument.  Students will be assigned topics and positions and will need to research, structure, and present their arguments to the rest of the class.

Newspaper (6th-12th) - 1st Period

Extra!  Extra!  Read all about it!  MBCA is in need of students for our first-ever newspaper staff!  If you are eager to learn about reporting, photography, editing, and printing, then this is the class for you!  We will use Canva to make and print a bi-weekly newspaper.

 

DISCLAIMER:  Students must be eager to participate and learn about making a weekly newspaper.

Conversational German (7th-12th) - 1st Period

Let’s explore the German language together.  We will learn basic, everyday phrases, along with other useful vocabulary.  The students will have input on what we will learn together!

 

This class, most likely, will have a small portion of “homework” every week that will be crucial for the next week.  This can include anything from practicing phrases to a short work sheet.

Wilderness Survival (7th-12th) - 3rd Period

**DISCLAIMER:  We will be making fires, using tools such as knives or hatchets, moving and lifting large branches, and learning real thing that can, at times, be dangerous.  Please consider discussing this class with your child before signing them up.  Make sure they feel that they will be able to stay focused, follow directions, and respond appropriately when asked to do something.  This will help keep them and other safe.  If I feel that any of the children aren’t able to focus, follow directions or respond appropriately when asked to do something, for the safety of others, I will discuss with the parents about switching them do a different class.  We will spend some of the class time in the woods beside the church, and thus may encounter insects or other animals that live in the woods.  We will have adult supervision at all times.

 

This is going to be a fun, exciting, hands-on class!  This class will provide students with the ability to survive in the wilderness if they are suddenly lost.  We will focus on several different skills:  building shelters, tying knots, compass reading, fire building, water purification, and more.  We will also learn about protection from hypothermia, sunburn, animals, and poisonous plants, and wilderness first aid.  After the students have mastered some of their new skills, we are hoping to possibly have some small competitions for them to demonstrate what they have learned.  I will also have the students work together as a team to accomplish a common goal.  This will demonstrate good work ethic and cooperation.  All students need to wear closed toe shoes to the class.

In this class, we will be making at least two cards each week– one card to send out to an organization of our choosing– the other ones we can take home and gift to a loved one or send out on our own accord.  

 

We will also dive into different techniques, like paper making, gel printing, and marbling, along with other things.
